Sovereign Bank continued its support of Oklahoma Baptist University Athletics by awarding $3,000 in scholarships to two student-athletes during the university’s annual athletics meeting early this semester.
OBU student-athletes gathered in the Noble Complex expecting a routine meeting about compliance, eligibility and other responsibilities. The energy in the room shifted, however, when two Sovereign Bank representatives announced that scholarships would be awarded.
Softball players Kaylee Davis and Abby Laskowski were surprised with the scholarships. Neither knew before the meeting that she would receive an award.
Davis said she and her teammates caught an early glimpse of her name on one of the ceremonial checks.
“I was just thinking, ‘There’s no way that it’s actually me,’” Davis said. “It all just felt too good to be true.”
“I was lucky enough to be chosen,” Laskowski said.
The scholarships represent one part of Sovereign Bank’s partnership with OBU Athletics. The bank provides financial support for student-athletes, coaches and community sporting events. It also recognizes student achievement through the Sovereign Bank Bison Athletes of the Week program.
Both Sovereign Bank and OBU have long-standing ties to Shawnee.
One of the softball team’s standout performances came against Henderson State, when a player went 2-for-2 with two home runs.
Through scholarships, weekly recognition and continued financial support, Sovereign Bank’s partnership helps OBU celebrate student-athletes for their accomplishments in competition, in the classroom and throughout the university community.
