Dear Black Couch,

So, ever since coming to college, I have found it really hard to keep the routine of reading the Bible every day. In the mornings I just don’t have the time and during the day I get so lost in the blur of everything that is going on I just forget. How would you suggest I incorporate Bible reading back into my routine?

Dear New Routine,

This is such a valid question. I have found myself struggling with the same thing. But, reading the Bible each day is a very important part of life, one easily overlooked. College is the stepping stone from childhood into adulthood, so it’s important to establish good habits.

Coming to college, finding a new routine that works for you takes a lot of trial and error. This is what I had to do to find a time each day to read the Bible consistently. For me, I downloaded the YouVersion Bible app on my phone, and every morning I take five to ten minutes to read the verse of the day, watch the short daily devotion, and spend time in prayer. Then I get ready for the day and head to class.

This short reading of the Bible and just spending time with God always changes my entire day for the better. It is so important. Once you start doing this daily, setting reminders or alarms to get into the routine, you will start to really truly want to read the Bible. It will become and integral part of your day. The hardest part is getting started and figuring out what works.

Think about it this way. It’s easy to find time throughout the day to watch TV or scroll on TikTok for a few minutes. Make it a habit to read a verse or two before you do those things. This will lead to a feeling of fulfillment and allow you to walk even closer with God.
