OBU’s competitive winter guard ensemble, OBU Independent, is back for another exciting season. After making its debut last year and finishing with a state championship through Winter Guard and Percussion of Oklahoma (WGPO), the ensemble returns with fresh energy, new leadership, and new talent.

This season brings several changes, including a new director, four new members, and an entirely new show.

New Leadership

Emily Eary now serves as director of both the OBU Color Guard and OBU Independent. Eary brings a strong background in guard performance and instruction. A 2022 graduate of Choctaw High School, she began spinning with the Choctaw guard at just 12 years old. She also marched two seasons of Drum Corps with The Academy.

In addition to performing, Eary has instructional experience at Choctaw High School, Edmond Memorial High School, and Carl Albert High School. She currently serves as the guard director at North Rock Creek High School alongside her role with OBU Independent.

The 2026 Show: Already Gone

This year’s program, titled Already Gone, features a cover of the Kelly Clarkson original by Sleeping At Last.

“I chose ‘Already Gone’ because of the emotional depth of the song,” Eary said. “The show centers around the idea of leaving behind something or someone you love, even when it’s difficult, because it’s ultimately what is best for both of you. This piece gives us the opportunity to elevate our emotional performance quality while incorporating choreography that matches the musicality of the song. And of course, Sleeping At Last is a winter guard staple.”

Eary added, “I am most looking forward to continuing to progress our show. I can’t wait until we get to produce the flag feature and the ending. I love a dramatic flag feature — it’s my favorite part!”

Meet the New Members

OBU Independent welcomes four new performers this season: Shawna Park, Samantha Phillips, Marek Polanski, and Adelaide Lack.

Shawna Park, an 18-year-old senior at Norman North High School, previously participated in her high school’s guard program before seeking a greater challenge.
“I heard about OBU Independent through a friend of mine,” Park said. “I am most excited for the whole show to come together and the new community.”

Samantha Phillips, 19, moved from Pearland, Texas, to study biology at Pawnee Nation College through Tulsa Community College. She originally made Zephyrus Independent Winter Guard but learned they would not have a season. She then attended OBU Independent’s audition clinic.
“I was grateful I was still able to try out,” Phillips said. “I am super excited to see everyone’s hard work pay off in our performances. I love seeing a team that works hard and is proud of what they’ve accomplished.”

Adelaide Lack, 17, is a senior at Tecumseh High School. She discovered OBU Independent through Instagram and decided to audition. Lack has already signed to join the Bison Brigade Marching Band next fall as a color guard member.
“I think winter guard is so fun, and I know the people at OBU are so kind and encouraging, so I knew it would be a perfect fit,” she said.
She hopes to continue growing her skills while building new friendships.

Marek Polanski, 20, attends the University of Central Oklahoma, majoring in Kinesiology and Exercise Fitness Management. A graduate of Southmoore High School, he marched in band before discovering winter guard. His favorite equipment is flag, and he enjoys performing after dedicating long hours to building a show.

Competition Season Underway

OBU Independent recently competed at Choctaw High School on February 14, 2026, earning second place in the Independent A category. Their next competition will take place at Putnam City West High School on February 28.

With new leadership, fresh faces, and an emotionally driven production, OBU Independent is poised for another strong and memorable season.
